I'm all for space, but a moon base doesn't make sense during a recession when the country is 15 trillion in debt.

The He3 will pay for the base many times over. With He3 we can build fusion reactors in a few years. He3 does not occur naturally on earth, it must be manufactured in nuclear reactors (the old fashioned fission reactors), but it is all over the surface of the moon.
