As I recall from high school, there were certain 'standards' that were on the literature reading list. I remember things like Moby Dick, Leaves of Grass, Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, Jonathan Edwards and his sinners hanging above the abyss of Hell. I don't believe I read Catcher in the Rye until college (probably a little too controversial at that time.) Do they still have those kinds of reading lists?
If I were going to assign books for high schoolers, I would probably include a couple of Philip K. Dick classics and some Kurt Vonnegut. Galapagos comes to mind and as for Philip K. Dick, probably the Man in the High Castle.
