There is no evidence that there is anything in the solar system we need that we can't find on Earth. And it is possible that we may never be able to reach even the nearest star.

There are plenty of other worthwhile projects that NASA can be addressing - such as figuring out how to deal with an EMP incident. It's not just the Iranians who are a threat because of that - we also have the sun.

but putting scientists to work doing something that by definition needs to be kept out of the public eye doesn't exactly play to the crowd when you are in classic pandering mode
