This is my own personal opinion, but I believe the animosity began when a certain poster whom I will not name and one who visits infrequently but usually around election time started posting negative articles about every other candidate but Mitt Romney here on this thread. As expected, posters here have their favorite candidates and when they saw him/her being (what they considered) unfairly attacked they responded. As the personal attacks became more frantic, some, including myself became more aggressive and it took off from there. Before that started happening, there was a lot of harmony between all of us on this thread, but those negative and unfair attacks changed everything imo.

>> It seems though in the past that conservatives were a lot more civil to each other. <<

Political unity and divisiveness in and between the parties ebbs and flows. When most of us were young, yes politics was less caustic at least on the surface than what we have today. The country however has gone through many stages and periods. Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel and Andrew Jackson was in numerous duels. Also there were many single term presidents in the 1800s. There was a falling out between Teddy Roosevelt and Howard Taft that led to the failed Bull Moose Party. FDR's first VP John Garner ran against Roosevelt's third term and FDR had two more VPs. There's always something going on.

There is practically no difference between any of the GOP candidates and Obama. We're trained to see the differences so it doesn't strike us they're all similar big tax and spend candidates. Even Ron Paul would be completely hamstrung by the process in the unlikely event he was elected. A true streamlining of the system would throw millions of registered voters out of work so we know that won't happen.
