A big difference between then and now is that then, we didn't have 100 trillions in unfunded liabilities that are due to be paid and now we do.

We could handle a debt service on 15 trillion. But when you add in Medicare and Ss, then pile state unfunfpded mandates on top of it, it is difficult to imagine a scenario under which these obligations are met.

we are going to see a huge drop in our standards of living over the coming 50 years, and it would seem there is little to be done about it. At least, we ought to be able to be honest about what killed our country, and as was predicted centuries ago, this democracy could not survive because voters figured out they could vote themselves money, which could be borrowed in ridiculous amounts, without the slightest hesitation on the part of the public.
