I think he was channeling Will Rogers: "I'm not a member of any organized political party -- I'm a Democrat."

It's not bitumen itself that is going to be piped, but something called "Upgrade" (which is semi-diluted semi refined bitumen.) It is not tar like at all.

The Keystone pipeline was not that all that important to me as long as it was the environmentalists were the ones who were opposing it for political reasons. I started to take interest when the Republicans placed in the front burner in December with the provisional extension of middle class tax cuts and said that it would create jobs.

I have also indicated to you that I have several folks overseas who are activists in GreenPeace International. I have met with them in person and discussed some of the topics that they are active in. And by the way, they are all retired and do not have to go to work. Economically well off. since they have my email address, I receive some GreenPeace related email from them. One of them sent me this piece after Obama decided against the pipeline.
greenpeace.org

Just yesterday, another friend who is also in the email circle sent me this URL:
ilr.cornell.edu (On a side note, I had trouble pulling it up with Internet Explorer but not with Mozilla, coincidental :))

After reading this, and the earlier one, I believe the second one because it is from a very independent source which is a reputable academic institution and is based on data. The first one is purely political which says something like "We won the first round. Now let us get ready to fight the second round."

I sent this URL to John Mauldin. I am waiting to see if he quotes this in "Stratfor". I am not sure if it is politically wise for the WH to push one study over the other. But they should at least state over and over again that their decisions are based on professional opinions and studies and just not political rhetoric. I hope they are taking up such studies with the labor unions.

And then there is the common sense question (yeah right common sense or rare sense): if the projections for job creations during the time the stimulus was approved fell way short, then how can we be sure that these job creation projections for the Keystone will also not be way off."

After reading the two posts, and particularly after reading the Cornell U study last night, I can now see the basis for Obama's decision and fully support it.
