KINGSTON, Ont. -- All three defendants were found guilty Sunday of first-degree murders in the 'honour killings' of their family members at the Kingston Mills murder trial.

Calling it a “heinous” crime, Justice Robert Maranger sentenced Mohammad Shafia, his second wife, Tooba Yahya, and their son, Hamed, to life in prison for no parole eligibility for 25 years after a jury found each of them guilty of four counts of first-degree murder.

They were charged in the deaths of three of the Shafias’ children — Rainab, 19, Sahar, 17 and Geeti, 13 — and Shafia’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad.

The four women were found dead in a car at the bottom of the Kingston Mills locks June 30, 2009.

The jury deliberated for about 15 hours before rendering its verdict. Jurors heard from 58 witnesses and reviewed 160 exhibits.
