<<< but most of us understand that our system is broken. We spend more than any other country in the world on education and since the fifties the quality of education at every level has fallen.>>>>

Stating the obvious; it's not education that is bad it is that something in how we do it that is wrong. I'm all for eliminating the Dept of education - as I think education needs to be controlled at the local level. I don't want my child educated on a curriculum from a Georgia President for instance. But, ...Sooooooo, if it is not at the federal level, how do we correct it so it works?

That is another right wing myth. The system is not broken. I taught public school, went to many public schools and had many freinds who went to public schools. My entire extended family went to public schools and I never heard a peep about any deficiencies.

The problem is the public schools have raised their fees too high because the right wing keeps cutting the amount of money going to them from the cities and states as they keep cutting taxes to pay for them. How come everyone in my extended family and freinds got such good eductions from public colleges.

The teachers are fine. I only hear about problems about teachers from people who don't succeed in school.

Buffett says he is proud that everyone in his family went to public schools. Says half kidding he wished they woul dban private schools, so the rich would support public education.

YOU are once again being fooled by the neo cons. That is a myth the neo cons sell to break pubic education in favor of vouchers. Which again favors the rich and keeps the masses down and uneducated.

<<<We could cut defence in half easily and put the money into education."

Then we could spend even more money to graduate illiterates. Koan, the difference between you and most on the thread is not as you claim, that the thread is anti education, but most of us understand that our system is broken. We spend more than any other country in the world on education and since the fifties the quality of education at every level has fallen.

Like most liberals you appear to believe that if you pass a law and spend more money the problem will be solved. What can I say?
