Most people who fantasize about violence like that are sad, scared little puppies deep down. They live their lives permanently steeped in fear of the Evil Others who ruined their would-be perfect world, and get to suck on the bile of resentment 24/7. A surprising number of folks choose to live that way. I don't suppose telling him that crime is way down in recent years would matter a whit.
