On the optimistic side. we have been in
an extended downtrend since Y2K and
are 11+ years into a secular bear market,
with several more years before full recovery.

On the pessimistic side, the 2008 RE
and Bank crashes are the start of a new
secular bear market, and we have 15 or
more years of under performance before
full recovery.

The 2012 election might begin to turn the
tide for the optimist case. If you look at the
long term market charts, a new bull cycle
is due to start in the second half of this
decade, iirc.

There is no reason money can't be made
in bear market rallies, or with long puts,
or short calls. Just be careful.
