WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — President Barack Obama jumped into a new social media format on Monday and, as if he doesn’t have enough to do, ended up promising a worried spouse to help find a job for her unemployed husband.

Obama got the assignment during a live-streamed interview organized by Google Plus, the online search giant’s new social networking site.

The forum was designed to show off Google Plus’ new “Hangout” feature, where several friends can video chat together.

“Industry tells me they don’t have enough highly-skilled engineers. If your husband is in that field, we should get his resume and I will forward it,” Obama told Jennifer Weddel of Fort Worth, Texas.

There was a Google moderator and five Americans including Weddel in the hangout. Obama answered their questions and also certain questions submitted via YouTube.

The discussion, which lasted just under an hour, was dominated by a pervasive sense of anxiety about the economic outlook.

For instance, a group of high school students from Fremont, California, discussed their fears of not being able to find work after amassing debt to pay for college. Another participant said he was concerned that Detroit is losing the race to build the next generation of cars.

Obama said he knew that everyone was working hard and said there was light at the end of the tunnel.

“We are starting to see signs that the economy is picking up,” Obama said.

“I have to keep this economy going,” he said.

Weddel urged Obama to end the H1B visa program for highly skilled immigrants.

“There are tons of Americans, just like my husband, with no jobs,” she said.

Obama seemed surprised to hear that a semiconductor engineer was unemployed.

“I will follow up on this,” Obama said.

The participants seemed solidly against overseas aid.

Even though Obama explained that the U.S. only spends 1% of its budget on foreign assistance, participants said they thought it was too much.

“When you see the hurting, it is hard for Americans and the middle class to grasp why we give as much as we do,” Weddel said.

Isn't it convenient that Biden is publicly stating he told Obama not to go after Osama in Pakistan. That is designed to make Obama a manly maverick keeping this country safe. It also is to bring the Bin Laden capture/kill back into the discussion. As if either knew about Obama's location until shortly before the operation. ;^)
