Sprint does not offer a separate texting plan. All their data plans come with (require) unlimited texting, included in that $80 minimum monthly recurring charge.

As for how the carrier competition will play out, it's certainly tough on them with the carriers all offering the same phones at similar prices. But I don't see how not offering the iPhone improves their competitiveness. It's abundantly clear that a large segment of the market wants the iPhone. For those customers, $1980 later for $400 today is better than nothing. Carriers aren't losing money on the deal (it just looks like it upfront because the iPhone delivered too many customers...).
