Jack,

Fort Mason is still there and intact. A number of the buildings have been converted into office and boutique space. The buildings on the pier at the base of the hill are used to house festivals and events periodically. I've attended both the Irish festival and the Dicken Christmas Fest on the pier at Fort Mason, during travels to the city over the past few years. A number of years ago, I also remember attending a play at Fort Mason, I believe they have a couple of playhouses there. They seem to have done their best to maintain the integrity of the area. You would probably enjoy a trip there over the holidays, I believe the Dickens Festival runs much of the month of December.

By the way those sea lions are still there around the wharf, barking all the time...

I've got a picture of it in my head.
