Sheriffs are very important. Our last election had a dufus and two extremely well-qualified candidates, one of which was elected. He is coping with a huge budget deficit and is seeking ways to pursue his mission more economically. Two ways: 1. He sends the Undersheriff down to our area (which is closer to the next county's courthouse than our own), to accept applications for concealed weapons permits and renewals for the same. Recently we broke a record of applications on those visits, and the Undersheriff says we are very well-armed. 2. He gave our Citizens Action Committee the use of a retired patrol car to conduct Neighborhood Observation Patrols. It's parked in my driveway right now, and I'm trying to get more participation in the patrols.
