There wasn't a "good fairy" on our shoulders either when we started out...We just put one foot in front of the other and began ...had only one car for years, rented houses for the first 12 years of marriage, moved around, raised our kids, we too borrowed from our folks some additional money to add to ours saved money for a down payment, and bought our house....paid that borrowed money back the first year by now being a two income family. That was the only time we borrowed money...we just saved everything we could along the way.

Neither set of folks had silver spoons in their mouths, and just started from scratch as most of the depression era kids did. Neither set of grandparents had much money, but neither set would have dreamed from taking money from the government. That was just the worst thing they ever heard of...To them it was like stealing.

I can't even imagine how upset they would be if they could see how many families and generations have been on welfare since the FDR days...They were very generous to those who had less than they did, and brought food and materials to them as needed...but I can pretty much guarantee they wouldn't have done it for very long if those efforts came to be expected!

I can understand being poor. But I was raised with the idea that "God helps those who help themselves", which seems to be a foreign concept to so many today.
