Except in Brownsville, Texas.

I liked her performances better with Big Brother than on the blues records. Of course, the blues stuff made her rich and famous. I love everyone in Big Brother, but, they were a garage band.

In Frankfurt, Germany, she hugged me and kissed one of my friends onstage. He said he'd never wash his cheek again. Not that it had ever been touched by soap and water before that date. <G> I was told by others that she kissed my cheek, too, but I didn't feel it. She had talent, but was no beauty.

A couple of years later, I was at a restaurant in Santa Monica when she and her new boyfriend walked in. She greeted several people. When she walked past my table, she looked at me and said, "how you doin', Pappy?", which is what she said to anyone vaguely familiar, but has no idea who he is.

When my date asked for a drink, she got her usual, unusual Dr. Pepper with Southern Comfort. Janis must have heard her, because I heard her say from across the room, "that girl must be from Texas." Which she was. <G>

What is really funny is that I never saw her in The Bay Area, where I grew up. I saw all the rest of the bunch: Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead (seemed like on every corner), Moby Grape, and even the Janis-less Big Brother, etc.

Back in the day, as they say, I had the hots for Janis - - she had just that right amount of voluptuous pudge.
You have to wonder if there's not some kind of grand plan for those who have to pass so young like Jim, Janis and Jimi, in terms of lasting image etc. I wish I'd never googled to see what Grace Slick looked like today.
