What no one seems to get is that the satellite companies will be delivering HDTV and SDTV....prior to....the broadcaters and cable systems...by Summer 1998. Why? They want more subscribers and the ability to deliver HDTV prior to the competition is their trump. Most of the satellite systems are upgrading to full Dolby Surround Sound in the first quarter '98; HDTV video is next. For a current read on DBS installations check out:dbsdish.com My read is that HDTV should help to double the DBS subscriber base within 18 months of HDTV implementation. The first DBS to announce HDTV implementation is Unity (the rest still are playing it tight): ST. LOUIS, Mo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 21, 1997--Unity Motion has announced it will provide space on its direct broadcast satellite facilities to carry high-definition television programming to its subscribers in the 1080-Interlaced format favored by TV networks and PBS, as well as in all other available high-definition formats. Unity Motion is a St. Louis, Missouri-based company dedicated to distributing by direct broadcast satellite pre-recorded and live high-definition television programming to North America and selected international markets. Unity Motion will also market multi-format high-definition television equipment to these same markets. "We're eager to provide a service to 1080-I HDTV programmers to make space available in our direct broadcast package," said Sean Henry, Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "It's important for national audiences to begin to see high-definition television so that the industry can gain momentum and begin to grow." Unity Motion will provide facilities to carry all HDTV formats, including 1080-I, 525-P, 720-P and 1050-P, as technology and programming allow. Unity Motion will also originate its own HDTV programming.
