Well, Jimi was having big money problems by that time, so he may have faded away. Dying was a great career move. He did not change to a cheap guitar when he smashed it onstage and some of the venues he was playing paid less than the guitar cost.

Janis was just the opposite. "Bobby McGee" had just been recorded when she died. I'm not sure whether or not it had been released, but her big bucks were probably in her future. People said she didn't do drugs, just booze. Not exactly true. Or even close to being true. <g>

Both Jimi and Janis always looked like they were stoned out of their gourds. Which they probably were. And they sweated like the Jazz musicians who had needle problems.

I could kind of agree with your theory except that neither of them (or Jim Morrison) were really political threats. Now, Phil Ochs being strangled by a "deranged fan" in The Sudan was more like a conspiracy story. He wasn't killed, but his voice was damaged. Songs like "I Declare The War Is Over" did not make the powers that be happy. I think Barry McGuire was supposed to overdose, too, but they couldn't find enough drugs to overdose him. <G>
