Clearly the government can manipulate demand.

Kind of like Keystone, huh?

This kind of obama politic is going to bite him in the butt.

He has to know it, and for the life of me, I can't understand what his ulterior motive is.

As I previously posted... We have $50 to $80 Trillion of unfunded liabilities right in front of us with ZERO means of funding them.

Creating temp jobs by borrowing money is not an option for the government any longer.

The government needs Congress people with the nad to address the problem.

Small business is the engine that will create the jobs needed to generate the revenue the government needs once the unfunded liability issues are addressed. As of right now... Government regs will prevent that form happening... Disneyland would not be built in todays environment.

That needs to change.

Then there is the massive debt sitting in the on deck circle for whomever is sitting in the White House....

but all those working on the project now have big money in their pocket and they spend that creating more demand

And all of those taxed for the project have less demand. That's even before considering the dead weight loss of taxes (compliance costs, enforcement costs, distortion of incentives, reduction of the positive incentives to work and invest)

I respectably disadree. If you build a interState highway system like Eisenhower did for example; the demand for materials etc is HUGE. Not only is that demand huge, but all those working on the project now have big money in their pocket and they spend that creating more demand - and so on. I picked that project as an example because it was under a republican President. There are many examples. Clearly the government can manipulate demand.

I am not sure I understand the full gist of this discussion, but what Steve said above is IMO very correct. The key thing to me is that money spent on the Interstate Highway system had a LONG TERM benefit. Not only did it create demand and jobs during its construction - it has helped to make the country efficient and a better place to live. If the government spends money on things that have a long term benefit the government can contribute to prosperity. When the government simply pisses money down rat holes that produce nothing but money in money heaven the government is destructive and likely criminal in that it is simply paying off its friends and buying votes for the next election.

I have one additional comment on small business. IMO it is very difficult to have a growing small business community if there is not a prosperous large business community. Many many many small business get their business from large businesses who are trying to move non core functions to lower cost providers.
