Westell Wins GTE DSL Award

Westell Technologies Inc., Aurora, Ill., won a volume supply award from GTE for its asymmetrical digital subscriber line network to be deployed initially in Marina del Rey, Calif. GTE said it will use the rate-adaptive flavor of DSL for user-to-network access speeds ranging from 680 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps. The ADSL OnSite service will be offered in unspecified markets where demand is expected to be highest, GTE officials said in a statement. The value of the Westell award was not disclosed.

Trey: >what ever happened to BA deal? we got it in MAY, and the stock went to 25. now we go from side to side. the deal didnt disappear. the point is that people forget good news.<

I agree with that too. I just want to actually see the WSTL equipment deployed. I don't trust PR announcements and telcos can always change their mind in terms of deployment. What if BA has trouble getting ADSL off the ground and delays deployment until mid or late '99? Remember they were first talking about much earlier deployments. I think the street has grown tired of waiting.

It seems to me that PAIR is the only stable company in the xDSL group, but that WSTL has the most possible future potential if events come through for them. You inferred you were big into Dec calls. I hope they work out for you. I have been losing thousands upon thousands with my investments in WSTL calls, admittedly when they were purchased with WSTL in the mid-20s and prospects seemed right around the corner. I was counting on an announcement with GTE ILEC when I purchased those calls. There does seem little downside risk with WSTL now in the 16s. Perhaps a few points to lower teens, not much else unless this market crashes. As I stated before, I would like to pick up WSTL at 15. Not out of the running yet.

How is this for a call strategy: If WSTL does bottom out in the lower teens, I plan on picking up lots of in the money or just out of the money calls, out to May '98. Do you have any intuition that leads you to believe December will be a positive change for WSTL?

Hal

Hey Trey,

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on where Westell will go from here with in terms of picking up intellectual property (any small company that could provide competitive advantage). If you recall Seamans mentioned that they are not finished on this front.

Cheers
Frank
