Biggest question before physicists right now be "Higgs Boson" (does it exist?). And this likely will be answered this year. Initial findings were at best inconclusive. Cern scientist predict they will be able to announce yeh or nay, this year. If answer nay(or: well we have failed yet to prove its existence, but we are trying still--but it doesn't look good) would rock all of physics to its roots--it would be a stunning failure, as the whole standard model of particle Physics would collapse. A couple scientist have said, they hope it is revealed there is no Higgs Boson, as the entire field of Physics would become mindblowingly exciting. But the vast majority of physics scientist WANT the Higgs Boson to be found, because if it isn't found all text books focused on the standard model would become passe.The vast majority of Physicist have been raised to accept as gospel the "standard model" Whatever, i hope we get the answer this year--if i hear them say Nay---i would simply say "Awesome!":) It is good thing there are a small group of scientist involved with CERN that want the Higgs Boson, be proven it is NOT there, as they will NOT yield to IFFY indications as proof. There are well over 1000 physicist involved with CERN that specifically working on getting the answer regards "Higgs Boson". Higgs, now about 83, is a delight--when asked how would he feel if it proved it did not exist, said,"well, that's it, decades of mathematical scribblings, out the window" and just shrugged and smiled: and said, the proving it is NOT, would itself be awesome.
