Trufflette, I did some reading on TR-3 tapes sometime ago when I was looking for tape backups. Two problems prevented me from the purchase. One is that the shelf life of the taped data is only one year, after which it should be re-written. Two is that using TR series tapes, one must religiously do "retension" on the tape after each use. DAT drives are a little better without requiring the "retension", but still have a limited shelf life (about two year, if I remember correctly).

I ended up buying more Jaz cartridges. :-)

"The Motley Fool" has an excellent daily summary of their Iomega thread at fool.com. I suppose it's the only place for organized discussion and information about Iomega, albeit one day late.

Sigh... One thread it is.

** OT to Trufflette **

Truff, I don't know much about tape hardware. A few dozen posts back, someone more tape-savvy than me suggested to another dissatisfied tape user to clean the EOT/BOT sensors.

Until yesterday, I had a Ditto 3200, which worked flawlessly for 2 years. I sold it to a coworker because I think tape, all tape, is too slow and inconvenient. I bought two 6.4 GB HDs, and use them to manage my data. It is about 10-20 times faster than tape to backup, and seemingly infinitely faster to find and restore the occasional file. It is invaluable when adding new software, since much of it seems to trash your Win95 registry these days, unless you do things just right. It used to be a painful decision to have to choose between accepting whatever damage resulted and hoping it would not balloon into an inoperable state, and waiting for hours to restore from tape before installing all over again. Now, for me, recovery is minutes away, and so I can try different things until I stumble on the way that works or just works best. I want to emphasize that it seems like half of all software that comes with new hardware causes problems during installation. Some of the more notorious include network cards, modems, mice and (sorry folks) Zip.

Having said all that, my solution is obviously not for the average person. But I do believe you are probably ready for an intermediate solution, JAZ (1 or 2 depending on your needs and budget) for your primary backup medium. Think long and hard about buying another tape drive - even DittoMax. IMO, they are no longer worth the bother. Again, In My Opinion. Feel free to disagree.
