RNA being single stranded isn't really a matter of being simpler, they have the same software encoded in them. DNA is the template for RNA. different sugars Variants of the same sugar. and nearly the same amino acid building blocks They code for the same building blocks. It is a mystery, but we know it exists It is a mystery but we don't know there is any set of natural process that encode information. Not light, not heat, chemistry, time ... none of those are going to encode information. BTW if it could happen it would have happened many times and would still be happening now and there would be a wide variety of very different unrelated genetic codes in existence.

Kinda like what is expected to be built first; a biplane or a 747. Simpler is better for getting started for so many reasons. Little steps .... Always amazes the early ages of the earth were a set of conditions of a different order that we have only the bare glimpses of but can be somewhat surmised . As you point out we do know there have been extreme changes in the composition of the atmosphere to its present day high levels of oxygen . We can easily surmise this due to the mass proliferation of early eukayrotes/cyanobacteria etc . But then what we see a mantra repeated over & over is why are there no observable processes of the early stage 'genesis' of complex organic molecules let alone the alpha amino acids in the present day mix which completely dismisses conditions present in those first primoridial ages of the planet's formation. The tendency is to look at that picture of the hellish stages of volcanic activity & bombardment and say "oh , it just could never happen" Forgetting that there was tremendous stretches of time to pass , saturated atmosphere & venting gasses ... rains, winds , electrical storms and young ocean floors littered literally with 10's of 1000's of volcanic vents . Its so a disengenious to draw that conclusion that if we do not see it happening today it could never happen , almost impossible to grasp that there are those that cannot embrace the possibility and not even want to imagine those ages of the earth. The first steps were little steps , just like these first steps in exploring these ocean floor vents is now possible, where German researcher Günter Wächtershäuser have made amazing discovery in real natural conditions existing today , mirroring the early young oceana and complex amino acid formation. ( leave it to the Germans to discover the origins of life , they have alot of making up to do ! ) There are other processes besides this that also can lead to aminos but here we find the possibility of it happening automatically with dramatic speeds .
