The theories are ranging. One that I like suggests that the earliest cell walls were clay surfaces that provided protected environments for replication and metabolism.

At some point, some RNA/DNA sequence started producing fats as a waste or other kind of byproduct. The fats represent a storage of energy from the sun and had a unique set of chemical properties. One organisms waste product can become another organisms reason to exist.

Very much like the process that transformed this planet's atmosphere from 0% oxygen content into today's 20% content. O2 was a waste product of the earliest, successful organisms.
