"Aliens, angels, and a distinctly altered state of sleep-based proportions. To some degree they may all be interconnected. Keep that in mind if, late one night, you awaken groggily from your deep slumber and you see a strange, ethereal being in your room with messages of a profound nature. The entity before you may not be all that it appears to be…"

On Joseph Smith & Mormonism from a historical & social evolution take , he lived Dec1805 – June 1844 up in Vermont but his family moves down to the "burned over district" in upstate New York when he was about 12yrs .
en.wikipedia.org

Whats interesting about this time especially up in that area of the US which was experiencing this large Christian revivalist movement called The Second Great Awakening made up of many common people & slaves , note the chart , an exponential growth of off~shoot denominational sects start exploding in the US out of this time of intense revivalism & preparation for the Second Coming . And all this revivalism moves on out into the frontiers becoming a spreading "camp meeting" phenomenon and really doesn't die down until the turn of the 20th century when it peaks with the great Revival Tent circuits.

(So Joseph Smith is just 12-15yrs old as his family moves down in the middle of this revivalist region, here we go the "formative years" )

"Second Great Awakening"

The Second Great Awakening was a Christian revival movement during the early 19th century in the United States. The movement began around 1800, had begun to gain momentum by 1820, and was in decline by 1870. [1] The Second Great Awakening expressed Arminian theology, by which every person could be saved through revivals. It enrolled millions of new members, and led to the formation of new denominations. Many converts believed that the Awakening heralded a new millennial age. The Second Great Awakening stimulated the establishment of many reform movements designed to remedy the evils of society before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. [2]
