On Joseph Smith & Mormonism from a historical & social evolution take , he lived Dec1805 – June 1844 up in Vermont but his family moves down to the "burned over district" in upstate New York when he was about 12yrs . en.wikipedia.org Whats interesting about this time especially up in that area of the US which was experiencing this large Christian revivalist movement called The Second Great Awakening made up of many common people & slaves , note the chart , an exponential growth of off~shoot denominational sects start exploding in the US out of this time of intense revivalism & preparation for the Second Coming . And all this revivalism moves on out into the frontiers becoming a spreading "camp meeting" phenomenon and really doesn't die down until the turn of the 20th century when it peaks with the great Revival Tent circuits.
