Yes, I've seen this as well. Many home/business security systems sold in the past 20 years have had chips that were 'burned' with the Y2K problem in them. This is a hardware fix, not software. Many folks may not be aware they have this problem.

I think it makes a lot of sense for companies to migrate to more recent technologies wherever possible rather than re-writing their systems in the older technologies. Unfortunately, this is not an option in many cases. It is simply to expensive a project to undertake and introduces tons of new problems. In addition, the ability to purchase off-the-shelf solutions is not applicable due to the customized nature of their business needs.
