I agree with that.

But to add to it--LBJ went to war in the first place and Nixon stayed in the war far longer than he should have because they thought that they were politically "forced" to by the right wing elements of the country that were so paranoid about communism "taking over the world."

Now people are being "forced" to react to analogous sentiments about either "European-style socialism" or "Islamic terrorism" somehow taking over the world.

In the late 19th, early 20th centuries, it was anarchists, socialists and unions who were taking over.

In the antebellum period in the south, it was the abolitionists who were anti-Christian and anti-Constitution who were taking over.

It just goes to prove Gilda Radner's truism: "It's always something."

But it does seem to be the case that there is something about the American character that is paranoid and self-destructive. Maybe it has to do with how this land was taken from the natives who lived here before the Europeans came? I am open to other speculations or critiques of the above.

I do lump LBJ in there. I was one of the hippies who worked to get rid of him.
