Marshall did not have the depth to understand the document he swore fealty to, or the underlying reasoning, so tended toward ad hoc decisions predicated on "feelings".

I've heard similar things. Marshall was a good lawyer (he won the Brown v Board of Ed case and had argued more cases before the SC than anyone else at the time he was appointed), but he was put on the Court as a political symbol. BTW his nomination to a federal court by JFK effectively ended his legal career.
