I don't remember reading about fears of Nixon starting WWIII, but I do recall sections from more the books of more than one member of that administration about their fears he might try to start a coup. The defense secretary, forget his name--Win will remember, was reported to have insisted with the joint chiefs that all communications between them and the WH had to pass through his office.
