Mao wanted to break with Russian Communists and take China in a different direction and needed the US as a counter-weight to them in foreign policy and trade. At least that is my understanding of the situation. This may be somewhat oversimplified.

Who knows? But remembder how dangerous that period was for liberals. The black listing, etc. Nixon was rigth in there with Mccarthy. I still remember a picture of IKE hugging him. For IKE to take on NIxon!

If the left tried to do anything with Russia or the communists they were called a pinko. Dalton Trumbo and many other Hollywood types were destroyed.

Dangerous period for liberals.
