She kept going back to the same old people, same old places, and same old things. I am sure, every time she cleaned up, one of her many old 'friends' would be waiting to pick her up as she walked out the gate. Now, nothing gets to a druggie like seeing a old 'partner' clean and sober. The still-using 'friend' is still in that pit of quicksand, and being sucked downward every day, while 'Miss Fancy Pants" is clean and 'putting on airs' like she is better than anyone else because she 'faked it' through rehab. Well it doesn't take much of that sort of attitude to drag "Miss Fancy Pants" back down into the pit with all her 'old friends'. If an addict is not willing to cut those old ties, and form new, sober ones, they NEVER stay clean. Ever notice how someone just out of Rehab is on that 'pink cloud' of "I'm going to be a counselor and help others"? They mean it sincerely at that point in time. But once they see those 'others', and find they have been ostracized from the group ... those intentions go down the drain rather quickly. When everyone the addict has ever associated with is using .... staying clean is just not possible - and at the point they leave Rehab is the point they need friends in their corner. But since they honestly don't have any non-using friends ... well, it's next to impossible. An adult is responsible for their own actions .... true .... but at that point they are on the pink cloud, and projecting that image of being strong, and clean, and wanting to help .... is actually the point where they are at their weakest, and almost totally vulnerable to being dragged back down by their 'true, old friends'. Upon leaving rehab, they need to leave all the old people, places and things behind. Most can not, and that is why it is so hard to stay clean. It is like me quitting cigarettes - I quit 'hundreds of times'. I'm sure Whitney had every intention of staying clean when she completed rehab. But in the 'business', which was all she knew, almost everyone is using something. So ..... the cycle would start all over. The Rolling Stones used to have to hire bodyguards to watch Keith Richards 24/7 to keep him off heroin all they time they were on the road. Whitney needed the same thing, but you can bet there was 'someone' in her life who knew they couldn't control her, if she was clean ....... so they made sure she would have access to all the same old people, places and things. For one with an addictive-prone personality, it's a sure recipe for disaster, as we saw Sunday night.
