No, is not a 'fact'.

ALL the big studies show that ALCOHOL (and to a lesser extent TOBACCO) are - by far - the leading 'gateway' drugs... i.e., first drugs used *before* any harder or more illegal drugs are used.

(But many studies have asked the same question in slightly DIFFERENT ways, which of course results in different answers... for example is they ask "what was the first ILLEGAL drug that you used" then Marijuana might well show up in first place... mostly because it is so widely used. But alcohol is much more widely used still so if you ask "what is the first drug used" then alcohol or tobacco will always be in first place....)
