I think the article was a very simplistic view of the issues also. I don't agree with the underlying premise. I agree the mid-class is shrinking and that a strong and growing mid-class is necessary for a strong and robust economy. A lot of western economies have seen and are still going through a major restructuring as the Chinese, Indian and Latin American economies boom. I don't think there is a simple answer. Paying more to employees at organizations like WMT and MCD would only be viable if these companies could change their cost structures. There is a reason people go to WMT. It is the low prices. You only get low prices through a low cost structure.
