Hambrecht & Quist (HQ) 39 +4 1/8: shares of securities firm trade higher on takeover speculation..... Not by Ascend! Maybe Rambus Brief: Hambrecht & Quist lowered its FY98 earnings estimate for 3Com by 24% to $1.74... Cited Asian weakness, inventory levels and back-loaded quarter... Separately, COMS introduced the U.S. Robotics 56k Voice/Fax modem with x2 technology... Stock ended up 1 1/16... Fact company rose despite earnings downgrade indicates that the bad news might finally be fully priced into the stock... Maybe it is Ascend? BTW, I'm going to take another look at puts on COMS. This what Briefing said about Rambus, maybe they could come up with something for ASND? Story Stocks Thu 11/20, 1997 ****** 14:25 ET ****** RAMBUS INC (RMBS) 58 3/8 +15 3/8. Rambus...Intel... H&Q. Anytime you put these three names together in the same sentence there is bound to be in explosion in Rambus shares -- either to the upside or the down. Unfortunately, for Rambus shorts, the explosion has put the shares into flight. The launch came after Hambrecht & Quist analyst Robert Chaplinsky raised his price target on Rambus shares, citing the ahead-of-plan chip collaboration effort between Rambus and Intel. You ask, just how large of a boost in price target does it take to ignite a 15 3/8 point run in a stock? In this particular case, the target was doubled to $100 a share from $50 a share. The clincher, however, is that Mr. Chaplinsky expects Rambus shares to reach these heights not over the next 24-months, or the next 12-months, but over the next 6-to-12-months. According to the H&Q analyst, the companies have already achieved a working silicon prototype of the new Rambus Direct chipsets. More important, the prototype is rumored to be running at above 1 gigahertz, or 25% above the original specifications. Mr. Chaplinsky believes this increases the probability that the technology will become the industry standard for PC memory in 1999 and beyond. At this time, the analyst is maintaining his FY98 and FY99 earnings estimates of $0.24 and $0.53 a share, but notes that the '99 view could be raised if the companies are able to get the chip to market soon enough.
