Their presence preceded and also coincided with the historical records from Atlantis. Given the demise of the Atlanteans I wonder if that was a case of coincidence or Cosmic competition. Perhaps some sort of disagreement between the powers on hand. Atlantis is gone but Atlanteans survived and being human afford us a great measure of interstellar protection. I believe an eventual comparison between Atlanteans and ourselves will lay to rest human evolutionary theory since we look just like they look.
