Another thing that would help newly civilianized vets is to resist the military habit of using the word Sir or Ma'am at the beginning and end of every sentence. To civilian ears it doesn't sound respectful, just freaky.

I think it is incumbent upon us to prepare soldiers for civilian life before mustering them out.

Also, that bias against veterans is probably held by who, like myself, have no military experience, but unlike myself do not appreciate the military.

I can remember people badmouthing our employer, a civilian agency, as militaristic. It was nothing of the sort, except we did wear a uniform.
