What is perceived to be properly due to an employee is in large part a function of what is customary. What is customary may not be legally due, but that is the employees' expectation. If everyone else is getting a Ferrari, then employees expect a Ferrari and will feel put upon and gripe if they don't get one. That's just how it works. That's how salaries and benefits escalate. That's how morale slides. Wise employers understand this.
