THE CHARLOTTE SENTINEL, Sunday November 23, 1997

Section 42: THE LIVELY ARTS

MOVIE REVIEW:
"Anesthesia", by 20th Century Focks.

A barely-animated feature about the heroic struggle of thousands of ordinary surfers to keep awake while reading endless posts about the impact of Y2K. Yes, all the publicity would have you believe that this is a story about the romance and glamor of the Russian Revolution, but the sub-textual message of this movie is much more sinister and has a contemporary relevance that affects us all. Wake up, America!!!!

The Characters:

All attitude and determination, Anesthesia claims to be just a dumb girl from the sleepy province of Catatonia, but she really has a secret agenda - to put us all to sleep. Torn from the royal Bishov family during the Russian Revolution, young "Anya" is left with no memory of her past, and no concern for her readers. Trying to discover the truth about her past, she devotes her life to the creation of a vast network of cross-referenced posts related to the Year 2000 problem.

Slick and cynical, Murphi is an infamous con man in Silicon Investorsburg: disappearing posts, fake ID's, strange fluctuations in the price of BB stocks - he can get them all. Power is his goal, money his only passion. Now, handsome Murphi, skeptical about love, meets his match in Anya.

Vladimir Zvegintzov is a faded aristocrat; a throwback to the once opulent Russian Empire, when otherwise intelligent people thought the Year 2000 problem was no big deal. With his charming manners and naive beliefs, Vladimir trains Anya in the royal ways. An incurable romantic, Vladimir is the first to recognize and nurture the growing attraction between Anya and Murphi.

Bouncy is a rough-and-tumble, floppy-eared puppy with an endless supply of quotations by dead English authors. Destiny guides Bouncy to Anya as she stands at the crossroads of her life, and together they embark on an exciting journey. Devoted companion, fearless champion of free speech, and Anya's kindred spirit, Bouncy warns anyone with enough energy to click a mouse of the many dangers ahead.

Rasputin: Foiled in his ongoing attempt to fulfill his curse on the Bishov family, the sinister technician Rasputin is a wildly comic character. With his manic mood swings and comic self-obsession, Rasputin brings a new dimension of Elliot Wave theory and raunchy trash talk to the traditional animated villain. Rumors of his demise in a motel room with three hookers at COMDEX turn out to be unfounded.

Wexlok, a comical, excitable albino bat, is master of the snide comeback. This fast-flying little rodent is never at a loss for words, even if he only copies them from old Mondoman posts. An unthinking accomplice to his evil master's schemes, he bears the brunt of the ultimate short squeeze and dies when he is forced to eat his own fake CPA certificate.
