Some traders look for liquid stocks with wide spreads for quick day-trades between the spreads. Some call this scalping. Many brokers today offer SOES/Slnt/ECN trading, which in effect allows the trader to buy on or close to the bid, and sell at or close to the ask. In order for this to work well the investor is taking some additional risk in that if the stock starts to move up or down it is difficult to get out of the trade using the above.

That's how it works in theory....but not always in practice. ;-)
