Today I went shopping for a new PC with a soft budget of $1500. I traveled to my local Staples which is about 10 minutes from my house. There were quite a few PC shoppers looking at and trying out the machines. Staples had offerings from Packard Bell and Compaq in the sub $1000 category; HP, Toshiba and NEC in the mid range; and IBM at the top end. Compaq had offering in every category. Compaq dominates the shelf space and was getting the most attention from the shoppers. I disregarded the low end products which I think will be outdated quickly. By quick comparisons I judged Compaq to be superior to HP and NEC in terms of price, features and feel. I grabbed several product brochures and wrote down the prices for the models I was interested in before heading home. Next I went to Micron's web site (real cool) and checked MUEI's products against Compaq. I checked out the preconfigured models with the Free Shipping that is now available. I would guess that shipping is rather expensive, say $100 or so. Obviously there would be no shipping charge if I bought a Compaq at Staples. Stretching my budget to $1900, I like Micron P233. Seems like you get a lot more for only $47. For a PII233, Micron XKU looks much better than Compaq. Could one of you guys help me here? At the $1599 price point, I favor Compaq because I get a P200, but I like everything else about the Micron offering. Because of my bias I will probably choose a Micron. My budget says MME166, my heart says XKU233. As a shareholder, I see that Micron does not compete in the under $1500 category. Compaq seems better between $1600 and $1899 because of the higher speed processor for the price. Micron wins over $1900. As a shareholder, I wish MUEI had a sub $1500 box in its lineup and better advertising program. Thank you for your help. Regards, Richard
