Actually for ONE meteor I think we already have a solution as portrayed by Bruce Willis in that movie where he goes up and blows up himself and an incoming Asteroid.

We probably do have the ability to detonate an atomic weapon and deflect the course of asteroid at a cost we can afford--at least with a consortium of participating nations we do.

So for that risk it is something to consider.

However, if you are saying there is a limit to what we can do no question on that. The debate will be over what is reasonable and what else we will have to give up in order to take care of (perceived) risk.
