For assets you get assets back, for cash balance - money.
If options expire worthless, get nothing, if in the money - they are supposed to be settled, and get that cash and/or stock; if time permits, will be transferred to another broker who can trade.
<<is there a condition under which it may not be possible to get the stock back?>> If you don't have certificates, they are usually held by a trust Co. "in Street name", if destroyed by fire, transfer agent has a record, etc. However, when brokers fail, stocks usually don't do too well ... might not want it back.
Can always sue them, for lost assets, might get a "6 cents on the dollar" kind of thing.
