You made the possibility that Sir Richard did it sound very believable, but with a name like "Sir Richard", isn't he already part of the aristocracy?

And despite everything, I guess he doesn't care that Mary doesn't love him?

It certainly makes sense that Sir Richard had a hand in it.

The bit about Thomas came out in one of the first episodes of Season 1 - he got involved with (or tried to) another valet to a guest.
