If you can imagine it, there is probably a way to do it. (Example: I bought a phone number in Country A. When somebody from Country A calls this number, a computer in Country A passes the call over the internet to a computer in Country B. The computer in Country B then forwards the call to my regular land line. The caller pays local rates and thinks they are making a call to someone in Country A.) But the basics are pretty easy (so start simple and perfect to your needs if you are happy with how the basics work). What I know off the top of my head: 1. There is a way to hook a phone or phone(s) up to your computer and have them function just like you would expect "normal" phones to work. Probably would want to leave the computer on 24/7, but not needed as calls can be sent to a voice mail (provided by skype or others) when your computer is off. Go to amazon and do a search for VOIP phone. 2. There is a way to forward calls to your regular landline and make Voip calls over your regular landline, but this may or may not work for you. For this to work cheaply the Voip provider has to have a computer near you that can call you "locally". So the long distance call is done over the internet and the landline call is done locally. A simple starting point: 1. buy an OK quality combo headset with mike and plug into your PC (one plug into the headphone jack and one plug into the mike jack) example: amazon.com 2. Sign up for basic (PC to phone) service from a provider (probably Skype because they are at the top and likely offer the must user friendly service) . They might even offer a free trial or at least a subscription that you can cancel after a month if things dont work out. 3. Install the software they provide 4. Use your keyboard/mouse and their software to "dial" and make phone calls. 5. Later, if you are happy with the call quality, customize and accessorize. Going next to either some kind of VOIP phone or VOIP adapter if you want to use the phones you have or a really good, long range, wireless headset for your computer. After that if you are comfortable with everything, you can buy a phone number for your computer so people can call you from their phones to your computer. At the point, you might even be able to dump your other phone service all together. Side Note: Right now, Skype seems to be like the Klenex of VOIP. I am hearing kids say stuff like "Lets Skype" while nobody ever says "lets VOIP".
