Neil, wouldn't "earnings dilution" imply eps? Otherwise, I don't know what the meaning of "dilution" of would be. Formally, "dilution" of earnings per share was defined by the APB as the effect on earnings per share of the increased number of shares assuming all options were exercised, all conversion priveleges were exercised, etc. (APB 11, I think). Of course, that meaning has now been expanded -- but I think the focus on per share earnings vs. absolute earnings is retained.

I don't know what Del was thinking, of course, but in the common meaning I would assume he meant eps, not absolute earnings....
