We were going in the right direction.

Because with Clinton and Gingrich spending increases were controlled. With Bush and Obama, and the various congressional leaders over the past decade, spending has exploded upwards.

As for tax rates, even a static analysis (which exaggerates the revenue loss from lower rates, and the revenue gain from higher rates) of the lost revenue from the tax cuts, is dwarfed by the increase in spending. The spending is the real irresponsibility that's driving the deficit.
