if you check the link it is easy to prove to yourself armstrong meant 9 million gallons and not 9 million barrels. the link i supplied in the post shows the refineries delivering to retail around 30 million Gallons of gasoline in the last data points of the matrix. if you have not looked at the matrix supplied, it is quite amazing the drop off in gallons of gasoline delivered at retail in the past years.

from your question i assume you think 9M gallons per day is a scary (or wrong) number too for economic activity in the usa. it's either a scary number for econ activity, or a fantastic number for vehicle efficiency.
