Hi Jack,

It was something that stuck in my mind while reading some of the pro Microsoft, PR type fluff, that we see all the time. I don't recall much detail being given and assume they gave the largest number they could get away with (I tend to take a lot of that stuff with a large grain of salt). It would be pretty hard to deny that Microsoft has been able to take what is basically a side line business to them and turn it into a larger market in just a few years than Novell has been able to do with their core business in 14 years. The part that's driving me crazy is that I can see just how big a market networking is, and Novell seems to be paralized when it comes to making a shift in their marketing strategy. As I remember from that write up, the average NT installation is 4 seats. The market for those products has not quite reached a level where a commission salesman in a retail store could push it, but it's getting close to that point. A drop in price combined with nobrainer installation and maintainance and it's there.

I can remember when a cellular phone was a hard pitch for a direct salesman. The transition that took place was almost instantaneous. Novell is sitting on a gold mine with Border Manager and their small business systems but they seem helpless to do anything about it.

Regards,

Don
