I agree with you in principle regarding efforts to show liberal voters that Obama's policies materially harms them, but how is it possible to do this without making compromises with the left, at least on some issues?

I've always liked your analogy of student's grades to point out the fundamental difference between left and right ideaologies. For example, those who say they believe in "spreading the wealth" via marxism, socialism, and communism react with outrage if it is suggested that everyone in a classroom receives the exact same grade regardless of personal effort or results.

Likewise, imagine approaching a union and suggesting that everyone should receive exactly the pay and benefits, regardless of performance, longevity, or position. They would be outraged and bitterly opposed to the idea. Yet these are perfect examples of precisely what the Democratic Party represents.

So, yes, I agree that all Republicans should never stop attempting to delineate the differences, but I fear that some Republicans will compromise on conservative principles simply to win votes.

One strong point in Santorum's favor... NumbersUSA has recently upgraded him to A- on the issue of immigration, which moves him ahead of Romney, who was also upgraded to a B-.
