Bonnie, I have been thinking of how big is big--$190B is not very large. The US this year will take on $180B in new treasury dept. $23B or so from deficit spending and $160B from Social Security, interest on the debt, federal pensions, medicare, and other costs. What the Japanese have to do is figure out how they are going to pay the interest on this new debt. Now the question; is this a problem. All they have to do is sell some bonds slowly over the years, raise taxes, or raise income by some other means. But my thoughts are it is only the interest in the short to medium term time frame that has to be paid.

What am I missing.

I am trying to understand what the impact is and it could be it is not exactly a crises.
